Jean Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop

from $6.00

Legend has it that the Lafitte brothers used this house as a smithy in order to appear as respectable as possible while carrying on their business of piracy and smuggling. Built between 1722 and 1732 by Nicolas Touze, note the diagonal placing of hand hewn timber in the brick, a type of architecture known as "briquette entre poteaux" or brick between posts. The building is a favorite for artists and photographers and is reputed to be the oldest structure used as a bar in the United States.
